Inside The Mouse Castle 08-10-2015 - D23 Expo Preview

By Tim Callaway

In this week's Inside The Mouse Castle, Anthony and I let our imaginations run wild, speculating on what big announcements will come out of this year's D23 Expo. We're already wrong on one idea. At the time we recorded the show, J.J. Abrams hadn't yet announced there would be no new Star Wars footage at the Expo.

Whatever. It happens.

The three-day Disney fan event opens this Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center. I'll be there, taking in as much of the show as I can, but mostly standing in line a lot. And unlike many of the Mouse faithful, I won't be camping out overnight to be first in line for anything.

What secrets do you think will be revealed this weekend? Will attendees get what they want from the show? Will there be details about Disneyland's anticipated expansion and Disney's Hollywood Studios' renovation and rebranding? Will "Star Wars" fans get a full-blown trailer for "The Force Awakens"? What else can we expect from Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Animation? Does anyone really care about Avatar Land?

Give a listen to our half-assed opinions and feel free to share yours in the comments below. We'll see you in Anaheim Friday!

Enjoy!

The Mouse Castle Lounge 04-17-2015 - Star Wars Celebration, Day One

By Tim Callaway

Star Wars fans from around the world are at the Anaheim Convention Center for Star Wars Celebration, a 4-day extravaganza of presentations, exhibits, costumes and celebrity guests that are all about that time long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Team Mouse Castle is here all weekend, checking out as much as we can, talking to fans, attending presentations, totally getting our geek on. And in a year that will see the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December, all I can say is you can feel an awful lot of excitement among the tens of thousands of fans here at Star Wars Celebration.

Thursday, day one, was a huge day at Star Wars Celebration. The event kicked off with the highly anticipated appearance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy. And they did not disappoint. You might have heard something about it. There was this--I don't know--movie trailer, I guess, that premiered.

That was the biggest highlight of the day in a day full of highlights. There were a lot of fans and a lot of fun. Thursday night, my buddy Scott Linder and I got together over a few cocktails at the Anabella Hotel to recap day one and to look ahead to what else is in store this weekend. It's not a trap. It's Star Wars Celebration in The Mouse Castle Lounge.

D23 Expo Tickets On Sale August 14th

D23, the official Disney fan club, announced today that tickets for the biennial D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center will go on sale August 14th at 10:00 a.m. PT, a full year ahead of the event. Once again, discount pricing will be available for buying early, with the best prices reserved for D23 members.

Gold and Silver level members with deep pockets can throw down $2,000 (an increase of $500 from 2013) to buy a Sorcerer Package which includes:
  • Three-day admission ticket and commemorative Sorcerer credential
  • Reserved seating at all presentations in the main hall, Stage 23, and Stage 28
  • Limited-edition D23 American Tourister boarding bag
  • Pre-Expo tour of the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit
  • Special tour of the Walt Disney Imagineering Pavilion
  • Exclusive shopping time in the D23 Expo Dream Store, Disney Store, and Mickey’s of Glendale
  • Tour of the D23 Expo show floor the day before the Expo is open to the public
  • Welcome Reception on Thursday evening
  • Exclusive entrance to the Expo each morning
  • A voucher for an appointment with an on-site massage therapist
  • Exclusive D23 Expo gift pack including gifts from D23 and the rest of The Walt Disney Company
  • Saturday morning Meet and Greet Coffee with a special Disney guest
  • “Fond Farewell” reception on final day of Expo
  • Plus, access to the Sorcerer Member Lounge and other benefits
Despite the price, it will probably only take a few minutes for these limited-availability Sorcerer tix to sell-out. If you're so inclined, have your credit card and D23 membership card ready immediately when tickets go on sale. Because, seriously, you cannot put a price on being first in line for all the arena and stage presentations.

Bert and Mary's merry-go-round horses from Mary Poppins were part of
the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives at 2013's D23 Expo.
The D23 Expo showcases all things Disney (and Pixar and Lucasfilm and Marvel) in movies, television, theme parks, consumer products, online media and video games. Given 2015 is Disneyland's 60th birthday and will mark the return of Star Wars to movie theaters, I'd say this Expo has plenty going for it. An exclusive preview of Episode VII with J.J. Abrams and cast is pretty much a guarantee. I think the line for that presentation has already formed.

Animator Glen Keane was honored as a Disney Legend in 2013.
The Expo will also feature the return of favorites like the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit, the Disney Legends Awards and, of course, appearances by a host of celebrities. Special guests at previous D23 Expos include Johnny Depp, Jodi Benson, Robert Downey Jr., Angelina Jolie, Tom Hiddleston, Alan Menken, Richard Sherman, Billy Crystal and John Goodman.

D23 Expo Returns to Anaheim in 2013

Maybe we should start getting in line now.

Disney has announced that their mega-fan event, the D23 Expo, will return to the Anaheim Convention Center for the third time on August 9-11, 2013.

Over 40,000 people attended the 2011 event. Says D23 head Steven Clark, "The D23 Expo has become a phenomenal way for Disney fans to see everything they love about Disney all in one place — from Disney’s biggest stars and latest innovations to unforgettable performances live on stage,"

Celebrities appearing at last year's Expo included Dick Van Dyke, John Lasseter, Paige O'Hara, Jodi Benson, Billy Crystal and Jon Cryer.

The popular Disney Legends Ceremony will be back, as will the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit, featuring all manner of movie memorabilia and collectibles from the Disney vault.

Disney has drawn fire in the past from disgruntled fans who complained of excessive lines and insufficient seating at popular presentations at the Expo. Disney has promised to offer expanded seating at certain venues for the 2013 event.

Tickets will go on sale one year in advance on August 9, 2012. No word yet on cost or whether there will be tiered pricing for those who want to buy their way to the fronts of the lines.

More details are at http://d23.disney.go.com/d23-expo-2013.

My 1967 Disneyland Nostalgia Trip

1967 Disneyland Hotel logo

Rummaging through some old Disneyland memorabilia, I came across this July/August 1967 issue of Disneyland Hotel Check-In. Needless to say, it conjured up all sorts of memories of summer vacations spent with my family at Disneyland.

Check-In was a free magazine given to hotel guests that spotlighted events and attractions in the Anaheim area.

This particular issue celebrated the grand opening of the Anaheim Convention Center. On the cover were Goofy, Mickey, Pluto and "Miss Disneyland" Marcia Miner, Disneyland's 1967 ambassador.

The Anaheim Convention Center opened on July 12 with a gala performance by the Orange County Symphony Orchestra under the direction of special guest conductor Arthur Fiedler. Three days later, '60s rock icon Jefferson Airplane shared the stage with Jim Morrison and The Doors. The inaugural meeting event at the Convention Center was the Home and Decorators Show.

In this aerial photo from the magazine, you can see the nearly completed Convention Center (bottom left) with its 9,100 seat dome-shaped arena. Top left is the Disneyland Hotel with its single Tower Building. Look carefully behind the tower and you can see the 9-hole executive golf course (sized down from 18 holes) that was once part of the resort. On the right is Disneyland and its massive parking lot.

Compare the photo to this modern day shot from Google Earth. The area's filled in a bit over the last 44 years, and not just with Disney California Adventure.

When the Anaheim Convention Center opened, it had 375,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space. After three major renovations, today the exhibit hall space alone exceeds 800,000 square feet.

Since 1967, the Disneyland Hotel has added two more towers, which have recently undergone major remodels themed to Adventureland, Frontierland and Fantasyland (the Fantasy Tower will be completed in 2012).

The original front of the Disneyland Hotel was torn out in the late 1990s to make way for Downtown Disney. Here's a question for Disneyland Hotel veterans: Remember when you always took the Monorail or the tram to get from the hotel to Disneyland because walking was just way too far? Now it seems like nothing to stroll the length of Downtown Disney. I guess that's what happens when you have something other than pavement to look at. Of course, the absence of a hotel tram kind of limits your options.

The Future Isn't What it Used to Be

Disneyland Hotel Check-In also featured an article on the new Tomorrowland, the $23 million makeover of the land of the future that introduced the classic PeopleMover, Carousel of Progress and Adventure Thru Inner Space attractions.

Pluto hitches a ride on the PeopleMover
while the Rocket Jets soar overhead.
Check-In called Tomorrowland "a world on the move--entertaining space-age exploration and scientific adventures aboard a whole network of totally new transportation systems."

Disneyland's Carousel of Progress, transplanted from
the 1964 New York World's Fair.
This Tomorrowland of my childhood was bright, wondrous and constantly on the move. Today's Tomorrowland of Space Mountain, Star Tours and Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters, though entertaining, just doesn't have the same energetic feel. Maybe it's just childhood bias. As we get older, the good times of our youth always seem that much better.

Tomorrowland Today
Or maybe Tomorrowland 1967 really was better. My dad shot this 8mm home movie of Disneyland that year. The Tomorrowland footage, complete with the Skyway, PeopleMover, Submarine Lagoon and Autopia, starts at 4:03.

Yep, 1967 was a very good year.

As I dig through this old box of childhood memories, I've got a lot more Disneyland items to share--and some Walt Disney World stuff as well. Stay tuned...

D23 Expo Opens Today!

D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention CenterDisney's official fanfest, the D23 Expo, opens in just a couple of hours at the Anaheim Convention Center. Over 30,000 attendees are expected for this four-day event, showcasing everything Disney has to offer in movies, TV, theme parks and merchandise. There'll be a significant dose of history too as Disney unlocks the vault to display "Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives," an exhibit of memorabilia that includes costumes from "Mary Poppins" to "Tron" to "Captain EO" to "Hannah Montana." There will also be the original Nautilus from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and the jewel-encrusted storybook used in the opening scene of "Sleeping Beauty."

As far as events today, tops on the list are president and CEO Bob Iger's opening keynote and a rare public ceremony to induct this year's Disney Legends. Honorees include Robin Williams and the cast of "The Golden Girls."

I'll be at the Expo all week with photos, news updates and commentary. You can follow me on Twitter or Facebook and, of course, you can check back here for daily updates on my blog.

I'm heading over to the Expo right now. I've heard there's a big line forming already. Cover me, I'm going in.

See you real soon . . .

Tim

What to See at D23 - Day One

In less than two weeks, Disney will kick off the first "Ultimate Disney Fan Experience" when it presents D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center September 10-13. Disney has been teasing the Expo for weeks, releasing bits and pieces of information online and on various Twitter feeds. This week, they released the most detailed schedule of meet-and-greets, events and seminars yet (and they keep adding to it). Here's a look at what stands out on the opening day of the show:

Thursday, 9/10/09

10:00 a.m. - Bob Iger Presentation, D23 Arena
Disney's President and CEO will never be accused of being the most dynamic speaker, but give him his props. He righted the company's image after the fall of Michael Eisner, bought Pixar when it appeared to be lost forever, and made Disney an industry leader in Internet-based integration. He'll officially launch the D23 Expo with his opening keynote. Expect lots of video clips and maybe a few stars joining him on stage.

11:00 a.m. - Disney Legends Awards, D23 Arena
Attend the Iger keynote if only to get a good seat for this year's Disney Legends ceremony, just the third time in its 22-year history that it's been open to the public and the first time it's ever been held outside a Disney property. Disney Legends honors those who "best embody the Company's unique creative spirit, personified by its founder." This year's honorees have yet to be announced, but past Legends include Julie Andrews, Steve Martin, Dick Van Dyke, Annette Funicello, Dean Jones, Art Linkletter, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.

1:00 p.m. - 'Beauty and the Beast' 3D Preview and Panel Discussion, Walt Disney Studios Theater
I'm not sold on the idea of converting 2D animated classics to 3D--if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Still, I saw B&B's opening "Belle" sequence in 3D at this year's National Association of Broadcasters show and it looked amazing. The clip is certain to be shown at this presentation, perhaps with other segments as well. Definitely worth a look.

2:00 p.m. - The World of Vintage Disney--In Color, Storytellers Theater
Regardless of the presentation, if it brings out Imagineer Tony Baxter, see it. Baxter has a long history with Disney and speaks heartfelt and passionate about his experiences. His theme park credits include Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Star Tours, and the Indiana Jones Adventure. At this session, he and Media Preservationist Ed Hobelman will show off early film footage of Disneyland in the 1950s and 60s. Don't miss it.

3:30 p.m. - Haunted Mansion: Sounds of Spooks and Music of the Macabre, Stage 23
Randy Thornton is Supervising Producer at Walt Disney Records and his work includes the impressive boxed sets "Walt Disney and the 1964 World's Fair" and "A Musical History of Disneyland." Honoring the Haunted Mansion's 40th birthday, he and engineer Jeff Sheridan will talk about the musical history of one of Disney's greatest attraction and the challenges and joys of compiling a new commemorative CD.

4:30 p.m. - An Afternoon With Imagineering Legends, Storytellers Theater
Last month, after over 50 years at Walt Disney Imagineering, Marty Sklar hung up his mouse ears and retired. At D23 Expo, he'll host a panel of Imagineering legends that will include X Atencio (Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean), Alice Davis (It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean), Blaine Gibson (Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln, Haunted Mansion, Enchanted Tiki Room) and Bob Gurr (Matterhorn, Submarine Voyage, Autopia). To quote Captain Barbossa, "There's not been a gatherin' like this one in our lifetime." Well, at least not at D23, anyway.

7:00 p.m. - 'the boys: the sherman brothers' story' Screening and Panel, Walt Disney Studios Theater
You'd be hard pressed to find a more prolific songwriting team than the brothers Robert and Richard Sherman--or a more dysfunctional one. Despite a musical partnership that produced "Chim Chim Cher-ee," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "I Wanna Be Like You," and "It's a Small World," among others, "the boys," as Walt Disney referred to them, have barely spoken to each other in decades. This documentary looks at the musical talent that held them together professionally and the family politics that continues to keep them apart personally. The film was produced by their sons Jeffrey and Gregory Sherman, cousins who hardly knew each other until they were adults, and includes interviews with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Roy E. Disney and Alan Menken. A fascinating look at one of the little-known stories of Disney lore.

Those are my faves for opening day. In the coming days, I'll be taking a look at the other D23 Expo events being held through the weekend, plus celebrity appearances and the must-see pavilions at the show. Stay tuned . . .
