Inside The Mouse Castle 06-23-2015 - The New Spider-Man, 'Inside Out' Review, Deadmau5 Settlement

By Tim Callaway

Inside Out
After weeks of wild speculation, Marvel and Sony finally announced Tom Holland will be the new Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Jon Watts will direct the next standalone film for the web slinger. We expect that Holland will also appear as Spidey in next year's Captain America: Civil War.

In other movie news, Inside Out couldn't beat Jurassic World at the box office over the weekend, but that didn't stop it from scoring the second biggest opening in Pixar history. I give my review of the Pete Docter-directed film while Anthony and I get in touch with our emotions in this week's episode of Inside The Mouse Castle.
  • Maleficent made over $750 million worldwide last year. So, umm, yeah, there's going to be a sequel. Linda Woolverton is currently penning the script. No confirmation yet whether Angelina Jolie is on board, but come on, why wouldn't she be?
  • Zuri's Sweet Shop has opened at Disney's Animal Kingdom and it's serving poop candy. That's really all you need to know.
Zuri's Sweets Shop at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
  • Also at Animal Kingdom, Starbucks has opened up shop. Meanwhile, down the road at the soon-to-be demolished Walt Disney World Speedway, we've learned that the space is destined to become a parking lot.
  • Our condolences to the family and friends of JoAnn Dean Killingsworth, who passed away Saturday at the age of 91. The long-time actress and ice skater was an original Disneyland employee in 1955 and the park's first Snow White.
  • Historian Didier Ghez is a good friend of The Mouse Castle and we're very excited about his upcoming book, They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age. It's the first in a series of books Didier is writing about the great concept artists of the Walt Disney Studios. It will be out on September 8th.
  • Disney and musical artist Deadmau5 have settled their legal differences over Deadmau5's performance headgear, which bears a striking resemblance to a certain cartoon mouse. The terms of the settlement have not been released (and probably won't be), but the two sides are now playing nice.
Enjoy!

Inside The Mouse Castle 10-31-2014 - This is Halloween, Tokyo Disney Resort Expansion and New Disney Cruise Line Destinations

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween from The Mouse Castle!

We're getting this frightfully fun party weekend started with an Inside The Mouse Castle drinking game. No, really. Thank you to our loyal listener Ben Watson for sending it to us. He's clearly caught most of our shows and apparently has way too much time on his hands.

This game is not for the faint of heart (or liver), especially since we worked every element on the list below into today's show. Exercise caution and please don't drunk dial us when you're done.

Take a drink when:
1. There's an intro clip at the very beginning of the podcast.
2. A segue is attempted.
3. Anthony's dad Mike is mentioned.
4. Tim talks about Disney Infinity.
5. Anthony tries to do an impression.
6. Tim talks about a trip he took to Disney.
7. Anthony looks something up on the Internet.
8. Lady Tremaine is mentioned.
9. Marvel's future plans are talked about.
10. The phrase "Let it go" is used.

Cheers!

There's a lot more going on in today's Inside The Mouse Castle. Some of it is even newsworthy.

Tokyo Disneyland's Fantasyland Expansion
Tokyo Disneyland's Fantasyland Expansion
  • Oriental Land Co., Ltd., which oversees operation of Tokyo Disney Resort, will sink $4.5 billion into expansion projects over the next ten years. The biggest enhancements will appear in Fantasyland at Tokyo Disneyland and a new themed port at Tokyo DisneySea.
Disney Fantasy
Disney Fantasy
  • Disney Cruise Line is adding new cruises and ports of call to its 2016 itineraries. Tortola, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, will be included on select Eastern Caribbean cruises aboard the Disney Fantasy and Disney Magic. There will also be four sailings from San Juan, Puerto Rico, aboard the Disney Wonder with stops in Martinique, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and St. Kitts. For more information, visit www.disneycruise.com.
  • The new Disney Infinity 2.0 Toy Box Starter Pack (i.e., the Not-Marvel edition) will be released on November 4th. This weekend, however, visitors to Once Upon a Toy at the Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World will get an opportunity to buy the game before it's released anywhere else. It's available for PlayStation, Xbox and Wii U consoles and includes the game software, Infinity base, Merida and Stitch characters and two Power Discs. Purchase it Saturday or Sunday and Once Upon a Toy will throw in an additional Disney character figure for free.
Baymax on vinyl
Baymax on vinyl.
  • We love this 7" Baymax vinyl of Fall Out Boy's "Immortals" that's included in a special Big Hero 6 movie soundtrack bundle. You can pre-order it now at www.disneymusicemporium.com.
  • Maleficent and Planes: Fire & Rescue come out on Blu-ray, Digital HD, Disney Movies Anywhere, DVD and On-Demand on November 4th. Anthony and I are indifferent to Planes: Fire & Rescue (okay, we haven't seen it yet), but I still have serious issues with what Disney did with Maleficent. Why can't she just be pure evil? Why does she have to have a conflicted conscience?
  • New York's Empire Brewing Company brews a cleverly named beer called Strikes Bock. Think about that for a second. Empire. Strikes Bock. Yeah, apparently Lucasfilm isn't too pleased (although the beer is still listed on Empire's website).
Oh, and one final thing. Anthony is running for mayor in his hometown. Yours too. Actually, he's running for any office anywhere anyone is willing to write him in. Please ponder that on election day. Thanks.

Enjoy!

Inside The Mouse Castle 10-03-2014 - Bob Iger's Contract, Luigi's Flat Tires and 'Star Wars' Rumors

Bob Iger, Disney's Chairmen and CEO, has a brand new shiny contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the Mouse House into 2018. What can we say? We like the guy and look forward to him hanging around well past Disneyland's 60th, the return of Star Wars to theaters and the opening of Shanghai Disneyland. In the latest edition of Inside The Mouse Castle, Anthony and I talk about Iger's successful history with the company and continued promising future. We also take on these other fascinating topics:
  • It looks like Luigi's Flying Tires will be flying out of Disney California Adventure come January. We've always loved the concept of the ride as an homage to the long gone Flying Saucers at Disneyland in the 1960s, but found the ride itself less than user friendly with difficult to maneuver ride vehicles.
Luigi's Flying Tires 2012
Luigi's Flying Tires in 2012 when beach balls made the ride fun.
  • Disney and Amazon have apparently made peace over the pricing dispute that quashed pre-order home video sales, most notably September's release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Blu-ray. Visit Amazon now and both Guardians of the Galaxy and Maleficent are available for pre-order.
  • There's a lot to like about the new teaser trailer for Pixar's Inside Out, which is both a nostalgic trip through Pixar's movie past and a charming intro to its most original idea in years.
  • Are all those rumors about Star Wars: Episode VII helping or hurting the film? Casting and plot point leaks (and outright falsehoods) abound and some media sites (including this one) are pledging to keep legitimate story reveals as spoiler-free as possible.
  • At Marvel, Robert Downey, Jr. has said (again) that he kinda sorta probably will keep playing Iron Man as long as he needs to. To quote, "I'm sure we'll ride that thing. You've got to surf that thing all the way into shore." Make what you will of it. It sounds like he'll be around past his current contractual obligation for the second and third Avengers films. We're still keeping hopes high for Iron Man 4. Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix is definitely out for the title role in the upcoming Dr. Strange film, but Dominic Clark is definitely in to reprise his role as Tony Stark's dad in next year's limited TV series Agent Carter.
  • We love this imaged mapped Walt Disney World wedding cake. That is all.

  • Disney's Aladdin on Broadway is going international next year. The Tony Award-winning musical will open in Tokyo with a Japanese cast next May.
  • Need to pay more money to get more Frozen? For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration will run most nights through the holiday season at Walt Disney World beginning November 7th. Eighty-nine bucks (on top of your park admission) will get you into the private dessert party at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Call (407) 939-1854 for more details.
  • Basketball superstar LeBron James will produce a sports-themed television series geared for younger viewers to be seen on Disney XD. Becoming will spotlight inspirational stories from the sports world and will be released through ESPN Films and James's own Springhill Production Company. The first episode debuts on October 26th.
Enjoy!

Inside The Mouse Castle 08-22-2014 - Battle of 'The Jungle Books,' 'The Good Dinosaur' Do-Over and Tim and Anthony's Ice Bucket Challenge

Disney and Warner Bros. are releasing live-action-plus-CG/motion-capture versions of The Jungle Book in 2015 (Disney) and 2016 (Warner Bros.). Over the last few weeks a casting battle has ensued with both studios announcing A-listers joining their productions. For those of you keeping score at home:

The Jungle Book - Baloo, Mowgli and Bagheera
Disney's original animated The Jungle Book (1967)

Disney's 'The Jungle Book'
Mowgli - Neel Sethi
Baloo - Bill Murray
Bagheera - Ben Kingsley
Shere Khan - Idris Elba
Kaa - Scarlett Johansson
King Louie - Christopher Walken
Rakcha - Lupito Nyong'o
Akela - Giancarlo Esposito

Warner Bros.' 'Jungle Book: Origins'
Mowgli - Rohan Chand
Baloo - Andy Serkis
Bagheera - Christian Bale
Shere Khan - Benedict Cumberbatch
Kaa - Cate Blanchett
Nisha - Naomie Harris
Vihaan - Eddie Marsan
Brother Wolf - Jack Raynor
Tabaqui - Tom Hollander
Akela - Peter Mullan

In this edition of Inside the Mouse Castle, Anthony and I discuss the casting choices and which Jungle Book production we're favoring. Here's what else we're talking about:
  • Pixar is completely revamping The Good Dinosaur. This tale of dinosaurs co-existing with humans was originally slated for release this year, but now won't be out until November 2015. Is this a case of quality control, or is it a film in trouble?
  • Brian Patrick Wade will join the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this year as the villain Absorbing Man. This quicker picker-upper joins an impressive roster of guest stars that include Adrianne Palicki, Kyle MacLachlan and Lucy Lawless.
  • Get out your handkerchiefs. Monday night's Primetime Emmy Awards will include a special tribute to the late Robin Williams. His longtime friend Billy Crystal, who has been mostly silent--at least publicly--about Williams' death, will lead the tribute.
Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty
A screening of Disney's Sleeping Beauty? Well, well.
  • Tickets are still available for a special D23 screening of Sleeping Beauty at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank that coincides with the release of the animated classic on Blu-ray. Noted producer and filmmaker (and previous guest in The Mouse Castle Lounge) Don Hahn will be on hand to talk about the evolution of the princess's tale from the 1959 film to this year's Maleficent. The screening is open to D23 Gold and Silver members only. For details, visit https://d23.com/d23-events/vaults-sleeping-beauty.
  • No one has yet challenged Anthony and I, so we decided to challenge each other. We're talking the Ice Bucket Challenge. We'll be dousing ourselves this weekend all in the name of raising money and awareness for ALS research. Watch for our videos posting very soon.
Enjoy!

Inside The Mouse Castle 08-01-2014 - 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Review and 'Into the Woods'

Tim and Anthony trip all over themselves praising Guardians of the Galaxy in the latest edition of Inside the Mouse Castle. Is Guardians, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, the best Marvel movie ever? Will it crack $100 million dollars at the box office this weekend? Listen and find out.

Also, in this episode:
  • The first images and trailer from Disney's Into the Woods are out. Is this adaptation of the award-winning Broadway musical something to look forward to or will it be just another effects-heavy retelling of traditional fairy tales?
  • Anthony muses on the potential of Lego Chris Pratt, but gets really excited about the possibility of Lego Wall-E which could find itself in stores in 2015.
  • Registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend at Disneyland begins on August 12th. Annual pass holders can take advantage of early registration beginning on August 6th. More details are at www.rundisney.com.
  • Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, makes its debut on Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack, Digital HD, Disney Movies Anywhere, DVD and On-Demand on November 4th. Upcoming August home video releases include Disneynature's Bears and Muppets Most Wanted (8/12) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (8/19).
Enjoy!

'Maleficent' Lacks Evil Appeal

Angelina Jolie as Maleficent
On paper, Maleficent should work. Take one of Disney's most evil and iconic villains, a masterful creation by animation legend Marc Davis, and tell her whole story, a story of betrayal and vengeance outside the confines of Sleeping Beauty. Cast Angelina Jolie in the lead, an Oscar-winning actress with unquestionable screen presence who's expressed admiration for the title character and who, well, kind of looks like her. Bring in first-time director Robert Stromberg, a gifted art director and visual effects guy with two Oscars of his own, then add to the mix screenwriter Linda Woolverton, who has a distinguished Disney pedigree that includes Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. What could possibly go wrong?

Plenty.

Sharlto Copley as King Stefan.
Maleficent is a dark, plodding and joyless exercise in Disney revisionism that, even as it updates the title character for modern audiences, completely abandons what made her such a delightful villain to begin with. The animated Maleficent we were introduced to 55 years ago was dramatic, flamboyant and evil to the core. She was a badass sorceress who could hold a grudge for 16 years and morph into a fire-breathing dragon if you really pissed her off. Today's live action Maleficent isn't evil so much as she's moody, spiteful and victimized. When the douchebag-who-would-be-king Stefan (Sharlto Copley) uses Maleficent's childhood affections for him against her to fuel his relentless ambition, she pays him back years later by putting a curse on his newborn daughter that will take hold when the princess is a teenager. Then, for the rest of the movie, Maleficent has spellcaster's remorse and broods over whether it was a good idea to doom the innocent child--who Maleficent will gradually develop a relationship with--to sleeping death.

I don't want a villain with a conscience. I want evil. Can we have some evil here?

Oh, wait. Maleficent isn't really evil. She's just misunderstood. It's obsessed, power-hungry Stefan who's the evil one. Now I get it.

I don't like it.

Diaval (Sam Riley) in human form with Maleficent.
Maleficent starts out well enough. Our dark heroine is a powerful winged fairy and the de facto protector of a community of peaceful and magical fairy folk. They live on the moors adjacent to a kingdom of greedy and ambitious humans who don't like their neighbors. Conflict is inevitable, which results in a pretty nifty battle scene early on between all the king's men and the creatures of the moors. Under Maleficent's leadership, the mythical beasties beat back the advancing army. Later, when it's time for Maleficent to "bestow a gift" on the newborn Princess Aurora, it plays almost identical to the same scene in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. It's a wonderfully executed homage to the original and Jolie sinks her teeth into it with great relish. Had she been given more moments like this, Maleficent would be a far more buoyant and entertaining film. Instead, Stromberg and Woolverton opt to make the horned sorceress conflicted and introspective, even noble--and suck all the life out of the story. We're meant to like Maleficent for her complexities, but it's clear the filmmakers have forgotten the real appeal of the character has always been how deliciously evil she is.

As the teenage Aurora, Elle Fanning is fine in a role that doesn't give her much to do except smile a lot and be pure of heart. Better is Sam Riley as Maleficent's loyal henchman and spy Diaval, who gets changed from a raven to a human and back again as suits his master.

Maleficent had such potential to build on the legacy of one of Disney's most revered diabolical characters. Instead, it denies us the gleefully unrepentant villain who made us love to hate her in the first place.

'Maleficent' Executive Producer Don Hahn in the MCL

Angelina Jolie as Maleficent
Elegant, graceful and evil to the core, Maleficent, the wicked fairy from the 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty, is one of Disney's most enduring villains--and one of it's most original. Is there anything more badass than holding a grudge for 16 years, then morphing into a fire-breathing dragon?

Maleficent has remained so popular that 55 years later, she's finally getting her own live-action film. Maleficent will star Angelina Jolie (you may have heard about it) and opens in U.S. theaters on May 30th. The movie is not just Maleficent's take on the whole Sleeping Beauty saga, but also the back story of how she became the mistress of all that is evil.

Don Hahn
The film's executive producer Don Hahn is quick to give credit for Maleficent's longevity to Disney Legend Marc Davis, who animated the character. "(Sleeping Beauty) was published in France originally, but there was a lot of oral traditions and there was no Maleficent. That's Marc and the story guys and Walt. And she's become this very popular villain."

Don is my guest in The Mouse Castle Lounge today and he talks not only about the character and the film Maleficent, but also about his own amazing career at Disney that's spanned well over 30 years. Don literally started in the basement at the studio, first working underneath the Ink and Paint Department, perusing animation art in the Morgue (which would eventually become the Animation Research Library). He would later assist on such films as Pete's Dragon and The Fox and the Hound before landing his first associate producer gig on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. His breakthrough would come as producer of Beauty and the Beast, the landmark film that in 1992 would become the first animated movie to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. This was the first of a string of producer credits for Don that included exceptional films like The Lion King (1994), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), and The Emperor's New Groove (2000). In 2009, Don would narrate, direct and co-produce Waking Sleeping Beauty, his honest and heartfelt documentary about Disney's second golden age of animation and the many lofty talents and loftier egos that made it happen.

Don is one of the giants of Disney animation and it's my pleasure to welcome him to The Mouse Castle Lounge. Enjoy!

Angelina Jolie and the Cast of 'Maleficent' on the Blue Carpet in London

The cast of Maleficent, some guy named Brad, and the daughter of a Beatle strolled the blue carpet today for a "World of Maleficent" event at London's Kensington Palace. Select costumes and props from the film, which opens in the U.S. on May 30th, were on display not to mention a pleasant assortment of eye candy.

Talking Marc Davis with WDFM Curator Michael Labrie

Maleficent concept by Marc Davis
If you were to create the ultimate exhibition on the art of Marc Davis, you'd need a pretty big room to represent his animation creations from Thumper and Br'er Rabbit to Tinker Bell, Maleficent and Cruella de Vil. Then, of course, you'd have to consider all the concept and story work he did on Disneyland attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion and it's a small world. It would be a daunting task to do justice to that rare artist--one of Walt's Nine Old Men--who made an incredibly successful and influential leap from animation to theme park design during his 43 years with Disney.

Because of sheer volume, the Walt Disney Family Museum will be starting small in their upcoming presentation of Davis's work. They're making it all about the ladies.

Leading Ladies and Femmes Fatales: The Art of Mark Davis opens at WDFM on April 30th in the Theater Gallery and will spotlight over 70 pieces of Davis's work, concentrating on the iconic female characters he brought to life during his legendary career. The exhibition will be a fitting counterpoint to Magic, Color, Flair: The World of Mary Blair (currently in the Museum's Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall), as both Davis and Blair enjoyed a decades-long friendship and greatly admired each other's work.

I'm happy to welcome the co-curator (with animator Andreas Deja) of Leading Ladies and Femmes Fatales, Michael Labrie, to The Mouse Castle Lounge as we talk about Marc Davis's incredible body of work and what it was about him that made Walt Disney refer to Davis as his "Renaissance Man."

Don't make me go all fire-breathing dragon on you. Give a listen and enjoy!

Elle Fanning Visits Disneyland

Elle Fanning, who'll play Princess Aurora opposite Angelina Jolie in Maleficent next month, dropped by Disneyland over the weekend for a guest appearance at the Disney Social Media Moms Conference. She also took some time to pose in front of her character's namesake castle.

I do like the kick-ass horned mouse ears.

Maleficent opens in U.S. theaters on May 30th.
